Summarizing Chapters 15-17
The person Clara chooses tomorrow will write the summary for the next 3 chapters, 15-17.
After being at Gateshead, Jane took a long journey back to Thornfield, but tired of sitting she decided to go on foot from Millcote, when she was arriving she found the person she was so looking forward to seeing: Mr. Rochester, they had a little talk before she entered the house, he told her about the wedding preparations he made when he went to London and gave her the welcome. After two weeks there was no sign of the Ingram family, one evening she went into the garden where she thought she would be alone but Mr. Rochester had gone there too, he started to talk to her and said she had to move from Thornfield because he was going to get married, that he’s already heard of a job for her, teaching the five daughters of an Irish family in Ireland, but Jane said she didn’t want to leave Thornfield, she didn’t want to go away from him, this made Mr. Rochester confess his feelings about her, that he loved no one but her, so he proposed to Jane, explaining that Miss Ingram wanted to marry him just because of his money, Jane accepted the proposal, then it started to rain, that was when she realized Mrs. Fairfax was standing in the shadows with a shocked face for what she had just heard. The next morning, Mr. Rochester offered Jane his family jewels and to buy some elegant clothes for her, which she rejected and instead she made another request, she wanted him to answer one question, why did he wanted her to believe he wished to marry Miss Ingram?, he gave a simple answer, that it was all to make her madly jealous. Then Jane visited Mrs. Fairfax who was amazed by the news, she couldn’t understand, Mr. Rochester and Jane were in different social positions and with very different ages, she doubted about Mr. Rochester’s love for Jane, and suggested her to be careful of her reputation. The last night before the wedding Jane told Mr. Rochester about a strange dream she had, in the dream, Thornfield was destroyed, and Mr. Rochester was riding away, another thing in the dream was the candle light and strange shape in her room looking at the wedding dress, Jane knew it wasn’t Mrs. Fairfax neither was Grace Poole, then the shape took the veil and tore it in two, she wouldn’t care about that dream but when she woke up he found the veil torn in two halves, Mr. Rochester said it must have been Grace Poole, and that someday he will explain to Jane why does he keep her in his house. In the wedding day there wasn’t any friend or family in the church, only Jane’s uncle John Eyre knew about the wedding, who Jane had written before getting married, there was just two strangers at the back of the church, when the ceremony started the priest asked “Is there any reason why this two people shouldn’t get married?”, one of the strangers said “There is a reason”, so the priest stopped the ceremony to listen to what he had to say, it was a lawyer sent by Jane’s aunt, who had proves of a marriage between Mr. Rochester and Bertha Mason, the second stranger was a witness who had seen her alive recently, it was Mr. Mason her brother. Mr. Rochester had no choice but admit the truth, which he had been keeping in secret, so he invited everyone in the church to go to his house to see his crazy wife and to judge his decision of getting married again. After this, the lawyer had a conversation with Jane; he explained that her uncle was ill and about to die; now Jane’s future was empty again.
