The beginning, chapters 1-5

Hi class,
This is where we will start writing about Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.  The chosen person (Manuel) must write a short summary of the first five chapters.  The objective of this is to keep a record and it should be simple, short, but complete enough for people who didn't come to class on that day to just come read the summary and understand what's happening in the story.  We're counting on you Manuel to do an outstanding job!  The rest of you must read carefully what he wrote and add anything if it's necessary.

  1. Jane Eyre is a 10 years old orphan girl who lives in a large house called Gateshead with her widow Aunt Mrs. Reed and her irritating cousins Eliza, Jonh and Georgiana. A few years before Jane used to have a peaceful and happy childhood when her Uncle Mr. Reed was alive, but it got complicated when he died.

Many bad things Jane went through. One day she fought her big cousin and because of that she was punished in the Red Room. This room was never used again after Mr. Reed died there. Inside the room Jane lost consciousness and was very sick for some days. During those days, Dr Lloyd went to visit her and re-establish her good health. This was the moment where Jane told Dr. Lloyd all the truth about her real life in Gateshead and the relationship with her Aunt and Cousins

Jane was feeling unhappy in Gateshead, she wants to be loved by his relatives, but anyone tried to show that love to her, unless Bessie, the servant who works there and takes care of Jane.

One day, Mr Brocklehurst arrived to Gateshead hall, he was the Manager of Lowood, a institution where orphan girls go to be taught and become polite ladies of the society. Jane was introduced as a evil and wicked girl.

Jane was determined to leave Gateshead and discover the world outside, she wanted to make friends and have a happier life, and this soon happened.

Jane left Gateshead Hall and took a long journey until Lowood. Once she got there, she was received by Miss Temple who was the head mistress of Lowood. And so Jane's life at Lowood had started, she thought everything would be perfect in that place, but another reality was waiting for Jane.

The food wasn't good, in the morning water was frozen and some teachers were a little bit cruel with some of the girls. Soon Jane made a friend, she was Helen Burns who was always escorted and mistreated by Miss Scatcherd but there was always Miss Temple to change things and bring a little of happiness for the girls.

One afternoon, Mr. Brocklehurst appeared at Lowood, who started to complain about the girls' hair style, the food that was offered and specially about Jane. He warmed everyone about Jane's behavior and told to the whole school that she was a evil and wicked girl. Jane felt unhappy again and broke out in tears. Later she had the chance to tell Miss Temple all the truth about her real life at Gateshead and that she wasn't a liar, and to ensure this confession, Miss Temple sent a letter to Dr. Lloyd, that was replied soon agreeing with Jane declaration.

And so, Jane and her new friend felt safe and in good hands again, but many things are going to happen yet.

  2. Wow, excellent summary Manuel! I knew I chose the right person to start off on the right foot. I challenge anyone in the class to find an important detail that wasn't included in your super complete writing. Wonderful job!
